Who am I?

I’m Congduc Pham, Professor at University of Pau, France. My research interests focus on wireless and IoT systems. Click here for my professional web page at UPPA with links to all my scientific publications as well as keynotes and tutorials.

This IoT & Sensing System web site presents my activities related to this research & development domain conducted in various international projects. Many of these projects have their own dedicated web sites in which case links will lead you to these resources. Additionally, for some projects, only the activities related to IoT & Sensing conducted by UPPA will be described in more detail on this web site. Read this first post to know why this web site has been created in addition to my professional web site hosted by University of Pau.

There are a huge quantity of highly interesting IoT & Sensing projects from tech enthusiats, makers and highly skilled hobbyists! Their contributions can sometime be integrated and acknowledged in our development. In the IoT domain, our main interest are on battery-operated devices that can be deployed out-of-the-box to build larger-scale sensing infrastructures. Therefore, we put a particular concern on providing solutions that are highly energy-efficient and that can be deployed autonomously for a large variety of application domains.

PRIMA INTEL-IRRIS – Coordinator

PRIMA INTEL-IRRIS (June 1st, 2021 – May 31st, 2024) is one of my flagship projects that I coordinated where a fully autonomous sensing system for optimizing irrigation was developed in collaboration with soil specialists, agronomists, farmers and agricultural advisors. The main targets are smallholder farmers and a starter kit was developed, tested and deployed in several piloting farms in Algeria and Morocco. A dedicated GitHub repository hosts all the software & hardware developments for the sensing platform. For UPPA, INTEL-IRRIS leverages all the experience and lessons learned from FP7 EAR-IT (microcontrollers, embedded software control) and H2020 WAZIUP (energy-efficiency, robust design, LoRa transmissions). I’m proud that INTEL-IRRIS was selected among the very high potential projects invited to participate in the 1st Euro Mediterranean Innovation Market Place that took place on Oct. 3rd, 2024 in Cairo, Egypt!

Beyond technology, capacity-building was an important contribution: training events, hackathons and many step-by-step tutorials have been produced during the project. It was again an exciting transdisciplinary project where we worked with soil specialist and agronomist.

The INTEL-IRRIS web site still continues to list all the dissemination activities and new development on the sensing platform. Look at Results, News & Tutorials sections.

PEPR AgroEcoNum AgriFutur

AgriFutur is a PEPR AgroEcoNum project which is a national research programme on Agroecology and Digital technology. Start dateFeb. 1st, 2025. Duration: 60 months. Consortium: 12 parners. It is coordinated by Pr. Ouiddad Labbani from XLIM laboratory, Limoges, France.

What we are doing?

At UPPA, we will design a large variety of sensing platforms that could be deployed to better qualify and quantify the impacts of agroecology practices. Taking the research & development outcomes of PRIMA INTEL-IRRIS, our activity in AgriFutur will extend the hardware platforms with larger variety of types of sensors, including challenging image sensor devices with embedded AI capabilities, while keeping the same objectives: open & versatile hardware, out-of-the-box deployment and full edge-mode capabilities. Get access to all developed resources on our GitHub. You can also see all photos of various developed & integrated sensor devices as they are added to our ecosystem.

ERASMUS+ RADIO

RADIO (Research & innovAtive Development International Offices networking for upscaling research capacities and encouragement of multidisciplinary studies) is an ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE-STRAND-1 project (capacity-building in higher education). Start date: Nov. 1st, 2024. Duration: 36 months. Consortium: Algeria (USTHB; UMAB), Egypt (AASYMT; GUC), France (UPPA), Turkey (YOK). It is coordinated by Pr. Nadjia Bekkari from USTHB, Algiers, Algeria. Go to project web site. Get the official roll-up (.pdf).

What we are doing at UPPA?

At UPPA, we will develop capacity-building materials and workshop programs on Internet-of-Things & Sensing Systems. A network of stakeholders, scientific organizations, research teams and startups will be built to animate the capacity-building program. RADIO’s activities will be fueled by all the research & development activities conducted in PRIMA INTEL-IRRIS and PEPR AgroEcoNum AgriFutur.

Past Projects

2021-2024 H2020 ICT-58 HUBIQUITOUS is a an  Innovation Action aiming at creating a joint Africa-Europe Startup & Innovation Ecosystem for long-term collaborations and partnerships. With lessons learned from WAZIUP and WAZIHUB to build innovation networks in Africa, HUBiquitous is scaling up capacity-building & innovation in Digital Innovation Hubs accross Africa. Providing access to advanced IoT, AI and Edge-Computing resources is one of the main contribution of the project. READ MORE.

2018-2021 H2020 ICT-39 AFRICA WAZIHUB (Open-Hub in Swahili) is an innovation project aiming at boosting IoT & Big Data innovations in Africa through African Tech Hubs. Leveraging on the technological developments conducted in WAZIUP project, WAZIHUB focuses on developing innovation in Digital Innovation Hubs accross Africa. READ MORE.

2016-2019 H2020 ICT-39 AFRICA WAZIUP. Open Innovation Platform for IoT-Big Data in Sub-Saharan Africa. I would say that it all started with this project!  It is still a cornerstone for many of our activities on IoT, smart agriculture and capacity-building in Africa!  READ MORE.

2012-2014 FP7 EAR-IT. EAR-IT is an innovative project where the idea was simple: listening & streaming the sounds of smart environment! It was the time where we still wanted to have multi-hop relay transmission of challenging real-time trafic! Although WAZIUP started many of our activities in IoT, EAR-IT increased our technical expertise in microcontrollers, low power radio transmissions and embedded control software. Without EAR-IT, we probably would not have WAZIUP. READ MORE.
